The World’s First Electric Ferry Will Operate In Norway
Norway’s shipping company Norlend has lately been granted the license to operate the electric-powered car ferry on the route until 2025. The world’s first electric ferry has been designed by Siemens and Norwegian shipyard Fjellstrand. Beginning from 2015 it will carry 360 passengers and 120 cars across the Sognefjord fjord. Its shape was designed to reduce resistance in water; moreover the vessel’s hulls are made of aluminum instead of steel, thus the ferry’s weight is much less than usual. The new electric car ferry will have an output of 800kW and its two electric motors will be powered by the 10-metric-ton battery that can be recharged within 10 minutes.
