Robot World 2012 that took place in South Korea on Ocober 25th – 28th has definitely attracted many businesses to display their industrial manufacturing robots, humanoid robots, educational robots, and commercial service robots. Among the variety of other robots a household service robot CIROS has been successfully demonstrated. Its creators from the Korean Institute of Science and Technology’s (KIST) Center for Intelligent Robotics (CIR) have planned and programmed CIROS to help out around the home by performing simple chores, such as slicing vegetables, adding dressing to a salad, loading and unloading a dishwashing machine and doing other tasks. CIROS is 5’3″ (160 cm) tall, weighs a hefty 330 pounds (150 kg), and moves in any direction thanks to its wheeled base. Thanks to stereoscopic cameras and a 3D IR sensor in his head the robot can recognize objects, and due to a 12-piece microphone array – speech. CIROS is as well capable of holding a variety of objects and tools in its dexterous hands and can detect and avoid obstacles in its vicinity thanks to a pair of laser range finders and six ultrasonic sensors in its body. Besides CIROS, the researchers at KIST CIR are also developing a bipedal educational humanoid robot named KIBO.
