Will Seawater Power Vehicles?

Scientists at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory believe it is possible to generate sufficient fuel from seawater to keep the ship running over long distancesĀ or in hostile waters. This plan can be realized by means of a two-step green process that turns seawater into jet fuel that can power the ships’ engines: firstly, carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen (H2) are to be extracted from regular seawater and then these two components are to be feeded into a catalytic converter that will transform them into what JP-5 jet fuel actually is. The benefit of this approach is that unlike hydrogen-powered boat this system does not require any costly refit of the ship’s diesel engines. Furthermore, the Navy claims this process to produce less harmful byproducts, if compared to using regular diesel fuel.
