New Fire Extinguishing Acoustic System By DARPA (+VIDEO)
The new ‘wall-of-sound’ system was demonstrated by DARPA to fight fire: two speakers were arranged on both sides of a liquid fuel flame, the acoustic field was activated and the air velocity was amped up. Then the team used the sound system to thin the area of the flame where combustion occurs, called the flame boundary. The demonstration took place on a 10 cm square area, while in the future DARPA intends to implement the system on a larger scale for air force, naval and even space crafts. Despite extensive research held in this area, this has become the first new method for extinguishing and/or manipulating fire in almost 50 years.
