European Union Autonomous Braking Requirements
New European regulations will oblige new cars to have autonomous emergency braking (AEB) to achieve a five-star safety rating, starting 2014. AEB uses laser, video or radar to sense an approaching collision and prime or apply the brakes. The European Comission has held a study demonstrating that vehicles fitted with this technology are to reduce traffic accidents by 27 percent, which means 8,000 deaths prevented and between £3.9 ($6.05) billion and £6.3 ($9.7) billion saved each year.
