CHIMP (CMU Highly Intelligent Mobile Platform) is Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)’s entry in the DARPA Robotics Challenge that will begin later this year and will last till the end of 2014. The teams taking part in the competition have to design robots for doing various tasks like driving a car, traveling through rubble, opening doors, climbing ladders, and manipulating tools. CHIMP is a humanoid robot with arms and legs, thus it can stand and perform different tasks on a human scale. CHIMP can also move while standing, using only the treads on its feet: this will allow it to move while grasping objects with its three-fingered manipulators (“hands”). Designers claim that CHIMP will operate via supervised autonomy: a human operator will remotely-control the path taken by the robot. Though CHIMP’s own onboard systems will handle some functions such as collision avoidance and maintaining stability: a variety of onboard sensors integrated into the bot will create a texture-mapped 3D model of the its surroundings. This model is used by the operator to visualize CHIMP’s location and orientation; the operator can decide how to proceed within the various challenges using an interface consisting of a big-screen monitor, keyboard and mouse.
