Professor Christopher James, joint director of Warwick University’s Institute of Digital Healthcare (IDH) claims direct brain-to-brain communication will soon become a reality due to the brain-computer interface technology (BCI). Using his deep knowledge of the human brain anatomy together with BCI, he has managed to send signals from one brain to another. There’s a direct correspondence between a specific part of the retina and a specific spot of the visual cortex, and stimulating a specific spot on the visual cortex will induce someone to see a spot of light in one specific place. Professor recorded the activation pattern in the visual cortex of one individual, used a computer to convert this activation pattern into flashing LED lights of different frequencies and transmitted these light patterns to the brain of another person. As a result the second individual “sees” what the first was imagining. Of course it is too early to speak about telepathy now, but in future brain to brain transfer of information could turn out priceless to make better the lives of those with Locked-in Syndrome, end stage Multiple Sclerosis, or even those in a persistent vegetative state.
