Artificial Heart Implanted To Save A Baby’s Life

prosthetic heart, for an infant
The doctors of Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital (Italy) are proud to have implanted an 11 grams artificial heart in an infant. This is the world smallest heart ever implanted that supported the baby’s life for 13 days until an alternate donor organ was found. The identity of the baby hasn’t been disclosed, as the operation was not easy because the child had been operated a couple of times before and weighed 5.5 kg at the time of operation. The only twist was that doctors had to take permission of the prosthetic heart inventor Robert Jarvik and of the health ministry of Italy. This technology in future could save lives by implanting such prosthetic hearts for lifetime.
