Smart Stitches To Help You Heal Through Sensors

The new kind of medical stitches and surgical sutures were developed with two different ultra-thin temperature sensors fitted to thin silicon membranes, wrapped around the polymer or silk suture. The nano sensors are to detect temperature around the wound to signal possible infection. The scientists placed electrodes and wires on top of the silicon and covered the suture with epoxy coating to keep the suture flexible to be sewn and tied into the body. John Rogers, professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, noted that flexibility was among the greatest challenges during creation of the smart suture. Rogers and his colleagues hope in the future the smart stitches can be used to deliver drugs to a wound and will be controlled wirelessly.
