Urban Gondola: Revolutionary Futuristic Transportation System (+VIDEO)
Michael McDaniel from the Frog Design team has unveiled a futuristic transportation system at PSFK’s San Francisco conference, designed to adjust urban transportation infrastructure to the changing needs of the 21st century. Roads are too narrow to feed the density of a developed urban center, many people consider rail as a reasonable alternative, because trains can transport a fair amount of people with relative efficiency. The Wire is a system of detachable gondolas that could be a low-priced and efficient replacement of our current model of public transport. The Wire would connect urban neighborhoods to downtown, with a combination of elevated and street-level stops with transfer access to bike- and car-sharing programs. The gondolas could be easily attached to a cable during peak traffic hours and detached after the rush. McDaniel claims a gondola could be installed for $12 million per mile, since an airborne system only requires cables and air rights.
