Satellite Powered With A… Smartphone!
Within the framework of the PhoneSat Project, NASA is sending the cube-like mini satellites powered by Google’s Nexus One smartphones to space. The plan is to use commercial off-the-shelf components and to launch these satellites fairly often, as they cost $3,500 per unit. Having fast processors, high resolution cameras, GPS receivers, versatile operating systems, multiple tiny sensors and several radios the smartphones will be utilized by NASA pretty much as on-board computers of satellites.
