Robotic Leg Prosthesis Might Be A Panacea For Paraplegics (+VIDEO)
The team from University of California has developed a robotic leg prosthesis that is fully controlled using brain waves, making it a potential remedy for paraplegics and those who suffer from spinal cord injury. The gadget, dubbed the “BCI RoGO System”, is now in the early stages of testing, apparently more tests are to be done before this robotic leg can be FDA-approved. The researchers analysed signals sent from the brain of a person with a working limb and used those to recreate the commands, sending them to the robotic leg. Electroencephalogram signals were fed into the computer controlling the limb, making it recreate the action of walking for the first time. On average it takes up to 10 minutes to manage the new mind-controlled robotic leg, which is to deliver a 100% response rate without any false alarms that could lead to the user taking unintentional steps with potentially lethal consequences, e.g. when they try to cross a street or stand on a train station platform.
