Retinal Implant Chip Successfully Undergoing Trials

Retina Implant AG (Germany) has held successful trials in humans of their retinal implant microchip. The 3×3 mm (0.118 inch) chip, implanted below the surface of retina electronically stimulates the optical tissues of the patients providing partial vision to the blinded by RP (degenerative eye disease Retinitis pigmentosa). This subretinal chip is self-sufficient, works directly on the retina and merely requires an external power source. The researchers say that the results in clinical trials surmounted the expectations, as provided contrast lets patients identify objects, observe people moving in a room, and even read large letters, making out words on a screen.
