NASA Will Contribute To ESA’s Euclid Mission

Euclid is an ESA mission, which aims to investigate cosmological mysteries of dark matter and dark energy. A space telescope is scheduled for a launch in 2020. NASA and ESA have recently signed an agreement about NASA’s joining the project Euclid mission. NASA will contribute 16 cutting-edge infrared detectors and four spare detectors for one of two science instruments planned for Euclid. The telescope will be launched to an orbit around the sun-Earth Lagrange point L2 (a location where the gravitational pull of two large masses, the sun and Earth in this case, precisely equals the force required for a small object, such as the Euclid spacecraft). Over a period of six years it will map the locations and measure the shapes of about 2 billion galaxies. Furthermore, it will also conduct a study of the universe evolution, and the dark matter and dark energy influencing it.
