Ontario-based startup Thalmic Labs has created an innovative gesture-control system that differs from the Kinect, Wii, or Leap. The MYO armband enables its user to utilize the electrical activity in muscles to wirelessly control any compatible digital device including swiping between programs on a computer, switching tracks on a stereo or phone or even driving a RC helicopter drone. The MYO senses gestures and movements through muscle activity and motion sensing. When sensing the muscle movements of the user, the device can detect changes in hand gesture right down to each individual finger. When tracking the positioning in space of the arm and hand, the device can detect subtle movements all directions. Though it’s not yet fully clear, how the wristband works, it can be definitely considered a promising piece of tech.
