Mobi: A New Research Platform From Bossa Nova Robotics
A new research platform, mObi, has been presented at the RoboBusiness 2012 by Bossa Nova Robotics, a spin-off of Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute. This platform is based on the design of the Ballbot, a robot that balanced and moved on a ball instead of wheels. MObi can move in any direction and could be put to work as a telepresence robot in the future (though it’s not yet clear, how the robot will go when moving over bumps, like the transition from hardwood to carpet or tiles). It is fitted out with a dock, which can secure a tablet on top, facilitating face-to-screen conversations through a service like Skype. Thanks to a PrimeSense sensor it can follow you by keeping track of your location. Still the robot is unable to open doors, negotiate stairs, so it can’t be widely used outside of offices or hospitals.
