Levitating Graphite Disks Will Lead To A New Light Energy Conversion System (+VIDEO)
Graphite is known as a typical diamagnetic material that can be levitated in the strong magnetic field. Researchers from the Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan have recently learned, how to control magnetically-levitated disks with the help of light. The optical movement is driven by photothermally induced changes in the magnetic susceptibility of the graphite. It’s interesting that the levitating graphite disk rotates at over 200 rounds per minute under the sunlight, making it possible to work out a new class of light energy conversion system. The technique can be used to develop light-powered maglev transportation systems and to convert sunlight into kinetic energy.
