Genetic Data Storage: 700TB In One Gram Of DNA

Two Harvard Wyss Institute scientists George Church and Sri Kosuri have demonstrated how to store 700TB of data in one gram of DNA. Presently, the binary data should be translated into the sequence of DNA base pairs and then turned into DNA itself. Doing so involves standard laboratory techniques which take several days. Disregarding the speed, one more obvious advantage besides the virtually unlimited size is the stability of stashing information in DNA at room temperature. That means one can access your data thousands of years after you are diseased. Among the disadvantages, Church says that reading and writing data in DNA is “slower than in other media, however, which makes it better suited for archival storage of massive amounts of data, rather than for quick retrieval or data processing.”
