The brand new technology from the Fujitsu Laboratories can measure a person’s pulse from a facial image taken by scans from the camera integrated into a PC, smartphone or tablet. The company has as its object helping people to monitor their health data in real-time and store it in the cloud for later analysis. The pulse detector works by measuring the brightness of a person’s face: green light reflected off the face gives a measurement of hemoglobin and therefore blood flow. The reading will be made in about five seconds with the help of a camera built into a device: it constantly monitors the persons face and records a video when the face isn’t moving; then it calculates the ratio of red, blue and green elements on a certain area of the face, extracts the green waveform data and computes the pulse from its brightest peaks. According to Fujitsu, the pulse detectors can be built into portable devices and PCs, in televisions, mirrors, etc and this technology might be applied not only for health monitoring, but also for security purposes, e.g. for detecting suspicious people in the public places. Fujitsu plans to present the technology at the 2013 General Conference of the Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers in Gifu, Japan, and to start its production later this year.
