One of the most energy efficient ways to be environmentally friendly is letting warmth enter a house in winter and shutting it out during the summertime. People are gradually learning to control the amount of light that is allowed to come through a window or a glass pane. At first it was possible due to the use of electric Chromic glass, though recently a much more efficient way to block out heat and let it through has been developed by AIST. The new light controlling glass features a mirrored and a transparent mode which reflects light away or through the glass. The time switching from a mirrored mode to a transparent one and vice versa equals just to 5 seconds (a Chromic glass mode switch takes about 30 seconds or more depending on the size of the glass pane). AIST is now improving the switch speed between the two modes and is making it let 70% of the light pass through the glass in its transparent mode.
