Eye Microchip Gives Hope To See For The Blind
Giving new hope to the patients suffering from retinitis pigmentation (RP), a genetic condition responsible for permanent blindness, Retina Implant AG (leading developer of subretinal implants) have successfully implanted the wireless microchip developed by UK eye experts to the first RP patients. Just weeks after the operation the patients regained basic vision. Soon, the team led by Tim Jackson, a consultant retinal surgeon at King’s College Hospital and Robert MacLaren, a professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford and a consultant retinal surgeon at the Oxford Eye Hospital will fit another ten British patients with the microchip and 1500 electrodes below the retina, promising them to one day gain the full vision.
