Boston-based Rethink Robotics has developed an inexpensive industrial robot, Baxter, that is very user-friendly and can be trained to perform tasks by regular factory workers. The two-armed robot can be trained to perform a new task by physically guiding it through the required motions, within less than half an hour – no code-writing required. Due to various integrated sensors and its common sense, the robot must be aware of and understand its surroundings; once it has learned a task, it is able to apply common sense to what it’s doing. Thus the smart robot can safely work close by humans, slowing down its actions when they enter its workspace, and ceasing its movements when unexpectedly making contact with them. The robot makes an appeal to smaller manufacturers, cause it is conducive to performing several functions in several locations, even within the same day and doesn’t require any additional hardware or software. If the owner decides to expand the robot’ scapabilities, it can be done with regular software updates.
