Artificial Islands Concept For The Maldives (+VIDEO)
Climate change on a global scale causes the sea level to rise, people living in low-lying areas could move to artificial floating isles. The territiory of the Maldives includes 1,192 islands in the Indian Ocean, its population is about 390,000. The average elevation above sea level is only 1.5 meters, this index makes the Republic of Maldives the lowest country in the world. Scientist are worried greatly, cause the sea level is rising gradually since 1900 and they claim it will rise 60 centimeters more by 2100, extruding the natives from their homes.
The Maldivian government seems to have found a remarkable solution of this problem: creating of the world’s largest artificial floating-island project that will stay above water no matter how many glaciers melt. This project will be realized in collaboration with the architectural company Dutch Docklands International, which has a wide experience in building floating islands from concrete slabs and polystyrene foam in the Netherlands (earlier sand and rubble were widely used for this purpose in the past). They want to anchor similar structures to the seabed utilizing cables or telescopic mooring piles. This technology won’t disturb the sea and seafloor ecosystems, but will make land forms stable even to weather heavy storms. The design enables to preserve natural currents, troubling only a small patch of the seafloor. This year the company is projecting to begin constructing an island for 200 luxury residences and another for a floating golf course, but it also planning ahead to create islands for cheaper housing to provide for the future of The Maldives.
