A Smartphone App Analyzes Any Urine Sample
Myshkin Ingawale known for developing a needle-free test for hemoglobin, has presented his revolutionary projectat at the recent TED talk. It is a smartphone app that analyzes any urine sample with any type of urine test, called uChek. This technology might prove of great help for people living with chronic diseases and relying on urine analyses to check for chemical changes. A usual way to test urine is with the help of a dipstick: boxes on the stick change color based on what’s in the urine; a certain box changes shade for an excess of proteins, another changes for the number of leukocytes. Developers claim that uChek is a cheap, universal way to read urine tests by standardizing those color indicators: certain color “keys” saying blue means this, orange means that, and so on are being uploaded into the smartphone app. Thus you can test your urine using any generic urine test with the colors standardized. First you place your dipstick in a color-correction sleeve (kind of a little rainbow palette that makes sure your phone’s camera is properly adjusted to the room’s light), then you snap a photo of the stick. The app analyzes the colors and gives out statistics on your urine. You can even click on specific statistics to learn, what they mean.
