What’s Inventive Atomic Sensor System? DoD’s GPS Alternative.
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) plans to develop an inventive atomic sensor system as a Global Positioning System (GPS) alternative. The technology from the Chip-Scale Combinatorial Atomic Navigator (C-SCAN) project of the Defense Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is to be used in missiles and other military platforms in situations when GPS is not available. As for now, military technologies rely on multiple tools as gyroscope, accelerometer and oscillator for measuring respectively orientation, positioning and timing. The smaller and less expensive inventive inertial measurement unit (IMU) to replace all those tools is also more advanced in performance, as the C-SCAN project technology easily addresses challenges associated with the startup time, dynamic range, long-term drift, navigation, position, targeting and much more.
