The National Museum of Australia together with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is developing a robot ($3.4 million worth project) which faraway students will be able to control remotely, enabling them to take a virtual tour of the museum. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the telepresence robot will be the height of an average adult, have sensors and GPS not to bump into visitors or exhibits and move along on motorized wheels. A working prototype of the robot with a computer-controlled 360-degree camera is to be ready by November.
