Tesla Motors declared the launch of a network of Supercharger stations, designed to make long distance travel possible for Model S electric car owners. The first six Supercharger stations were built in California prior to the reveal; it is planned to build more stations along heavy traffic corridors in the the United States next year, to have more than 100 stations constructed by 2015 and to begin installing Superchargers in Europe and Asia towards the end of 2013. What is really stunning is that stations charge more than four times quicker than the modern Twin Charger method, but through the use of solar technology, they produce an excess of energy that’s channeled directly into the grid. They charge at 100 kWh, thus using the new Supercharger technology, drivers can get half a full charge on their Model S in just half an hour, giving it a range of around 150 miles. Tesla decided to place the stations in such popular locations, as restaurants and shopping centers, where drivers are likely to stop. Tesla Motors co-founder and CEO, Elon Musk, reported that ‘We are giving Model S the ability to drive almost anywhere for free on pure sunlight.”, i.e. owners of the Model S won’t have to pay for the service, cause the vehicle is effectively a one-off cost. So having an electric car seems now far more financially reasonable than it has been before.
