Höweler + Yoon Architecture’s vision on the future of mobility in our mega-cities in 2030 was awarded the €100,000 Audi Urban Future Award 2012 prize last week in Istanbul. The Boston-based company presented their rethink of the highway as the “Shareway” that unites the I-95 corridor between Boston and Washington D.C. into a new social space “Boswash”, which extends for over 400 miles and comprises over 53 million people, living in Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. This concept suggests an interconnection of existing modes of transportation into a single bundle, high speed transportation trains, freight trains, commuter trains, personal cars, bikes and pedestrians can coexist on a multilevel track designed to prevent traffic congestions. Being oriented on different people with different goals for and during their commute, a smart interface allows users to book cars based on desired activity ranging from the simple quiet, social or business oriented cabins to ones made for yoga or lectures. A “Superhub” would be built in Newark to support the interconnected Shareway; it would operate on multiple levels with airport terminals, airport runways, sea port, a rail station and interstate intersection, and would also offer parking and storage. The Sharestay model also presupposes reduction of the average rent to $10 per month when residents pay only for the time they stay at home. Besides there’s a Farmshare, also known as Baltimore: 722 currently vacant properties could be turned into 204 acres of productive agricultural land situated alongside the Shareway for efficient distribution. You can check out the detailed report about the Boswash Shareway concept in the video below.
