Mekatronic, a Turkish concern engaged in developing innovative mobilization devices for the physically disabled, has lately presented the TEK Robotic Mobilization Device. Its design is a definite advantage over a usual wheelchair, cause it allows paraplegics to comfortably perform tasks at standing height and to “enter” from a more natural, frontal position. The RMD can’t tackle stairs, though it can move anywhere a wheelchair can, besides the much smaller footprint enables the RMD go places a wheelchair can’t (e.g. in space-tight urban stores where the aisles are narrow). Designers do not consider the device as a substitution for a wheelchair, though it seems to offer more functionality.
