The results of a recently published study make it clear, that a mealworm is a more sustainable alternative to milk, chicken, pork and beef. The matter is, that farming bugs takes about the same amount of energy as farming chickens, and considerably less energy than farming cows. Grazing cattle is extremely destructive to the environment, cause it produces 15% of all the greenhouse gasses that our civilization generates; besides disafforestation aimed at creating more grazing land brings much damage to our planet as well. Have you ever thought, that to get an equivalent amount of protein from a mealworm, you need just 10% of the land area that you do for cattle. By 2050 it is expected that demand for animal protein will double. Of course, eating bugs might seem disgusting and revolting, but there’s a lot of other stuff that humans eat, like shrimps, crabs or lobsters, gigantic bugs with huge claws. Mealworms seem to be harmless creatures that could be both good for us and for our environment.
