The Semi-autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, created by engineering professor Julie A. Adams and archeologist Steven Wernke (Vanderbilt University at Nashville)to fly over archeological site and make high-resolution composite aerial maps, consists of the Skate with a custom software system. The SUAVe system is compact and simple to use; while its software can set individual flight patterns allowing to compensate for factors as wind, sun angle, and overlap between photos. SUAVe, currently undergoing testing at Mawchu (Peru), should potentially be able to accomplish in 15 minutes what an archeological team is to complete in two field seasons.
