The Air Force Research Laboratory Design Challenge organized by the U. S. military was meant to come up with ways for the soldiers to scale walls. The PVAC that won the award is the Personal Vacuum Assisted Climber designed to allow soldiers to climb up solid vertical surfaces made of glass, brick, concrete etc. The “Ascending Aggies” team from Utah State University created the suction pads gripping the wall as the user presses them onto it and releasing it with ease. The very important part of the first place winning design is that the user can let go and hang from the device hand-free.
