‘SpaceBread’ Rises In 5 Seconds Without Yeast
One of the NASA’s Space Apps Challenges named BakerFaire had to find recipes of making bread in space. Sixteen year old Sam Wilkinson was successful in finding a way to have bread rise instantly without yeast in microgravity. He needed just three hours to solve a question through forcing CO2 directly into water at 2.5 atmospheres and adding flour and water creating bread dough. When the pressure was released carbon dioxide inflated immediately (like when opening can of soda) and the dough was ready for baking.
