Financial strait caused fewer outlandish concept cars being put on the market by the automotive design studios. Designing a vehicle for the 2012 Paris Auto Show the French automaker Peugeot has fully explored the possibilities of new materials. Their new supercar concept called the Onyx seems just a flight of fancy and will never get into production. Shaped using raw materials innovatively, this supercar was designed by enthusiasts who have drawn their inspiration from the world of racing. Unlike most supercars, having showy paint jobs, the exterior of the Onyx is carbon fiber painted matte black; its copper panels are uncoated and are thus subject to a patina. The entire structure of the interior is made of one piece of molded carbon fiber covered in compressed felt. The dashboard is made of a new type of timber called ‘Newspaper Wood’: layer upon layer of used newspapers are adhered with resin and compressed forming a solid block. It seems that expensive and precious materials traditionally used in luxury vehicles have become outdated.
