Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize Is Looking For A Handheld Diagnostic Technology
The final goal of the Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize, announced in 2012, is to develop a powerful handheld diagnostic technology for health care. This global competition will stimulate innovation and integration of precision diagnostic technologies, making reliable health diagnoses available directly to “health consumers” in their homes. The $10 million prize money from the Tricorder X will be divided among the top three teams who’ll create a “tool capable of capturing key health metrics and diagnosing a set of 15 diseases.” Metrics for health could include such elements as blood pressure, respiratory rate, and temperature. The built-in AI must be able to diagnose thirteen core conditions like a stroke, diabetes, anemia, and three of twelve elective conditions like a strep throat, melanoma, HIV. Rgarding the design, a device must be five pounds or less; it must upload data to the cloud at least every 12 hours. The main thing about the technology is to give patients a history of daily data, the ability to track changes and patterns. A reliable set of sensors at home coupled with a good diagnostic tool will help detect potentially hazardous illness at an early stage and will reduce visits to a doctor to the cases they are really needed.
