Organovo (San Diego) started on the way to printing viable human transplants by first building skeletal muscle. Speaking of the technology, the process starts with special muscle cells being brought in into a 3D printer, which places them into a petri dish where they are encouraged to grow, intermingle, exchange chemical signals and organize themselves properly. As a result, the muscle tissue is formed that is akin to the living muscle tissue. Organovo has also printed lung tissue, cardiac muscle and blood vessels. The Organovo intends to one day print the organs for transplant patients, for now planning to gather the funds for research by printing muscle tissues for drug research of the pharmaceutical companies.
