Jets With Engines On Top Have Better Lift & Aeroacoustics
AMELIA is the Advanced Model for Extreme Lift and Improved Aeroacoustics from NASA and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. What gives this jet both characteristics mentioned in the name is the engines that are mounted on top of the wings in place of their usual underneath position. ‘Extreme lift’ put in bold numbers mean that an aircraft like 737 would have the landing lift coefficient increased by up to 250%, which translates into reduction of approach speed by approximately 50% and landing distance by 75%. This design also provides noise reduction and potential access to smaller airports, which can save both time and money for both passengers and airlines.
