Have you ever thought of going to the theatre, where robots and androids would perform their own parts on stage? The Seinendan Theater Company in collaboration with the robotics researcher at Osaka in Japan has made it a reality in their new theatre project. The Japanese Robot Theater Project is a part of the double-bill stage production presented at the Japan Society in New York Feb. 7–9. The two short plays “Sayonara” and “I, Worker” featured robots acting as personal companions or household servants. The machines performed their prerecorded scripts, they were moving and interacting with the human actors. Some of the robots use artificial voices, but to ensure more realism, the androids were given a real human voice. “Sayonara” featured the Gemnoid F android with a humanlike appearance, such as blinking eyes, mouth movements and several facial expressions; and “I, Worker” featured two “Robovie R3″ models looking like huge toys. Who knows, maybe robotic actors will substitute human ones in the next few decades.
