First Ever 10 GHz Silicone Optical Transistor

Researchers at Purdue University (Indiana) have built a 10 GHz silicon transistor able to propagate logic signals. That is a major step towards optical computing as it functions as an optical switch pushing adequate photons to drive two other transistors. The device is very compact and is compatible with Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology. It was created on a Silicon on Insulator (SOI) wafer with buried oxide (3 µm) and 250 nm-thick silicon layer.
