The solus4 design team is the winner of the last international design competition for a marine research center in Bali. The competition addressed the need for tsunami research and preparation for it after the devastation caused by the 2004 earthquake and tsunami in the Indian ocean. The 2500 square meter impressive fluid structure will be situated 150 meters off shore from the Kuta beach. The project features research labs, bedrooms for scientists, a seawater pool, an aquatic garden library and an auditorium that would be located under and over the surface of the sea. The design team aimed at understanding the wave dynamics and the resulting wave force patterns that are generated as tsunami waves are created and radiate out from an epicenter. The wave forces, when translated to linear patterns, inform the shapes that are integrated into the building form. Caring about the nature of the universal ocean, the project is absolutely energy efficient. The structure boasts large both transparent and opaque glass-based panels, as well as embedded PV cells. The tidal / current generators serve the power requirements; rainwater collection and seawater conversion systems fit with the domestic water requirements. The unique shapes and programmatic requirements of the marine research center would allow both scientific studies and tourism in this location.
