Cheap Solar Powered Desalination System Has Been Developed

A team of European researchers from CORDIS believe they can make the expensive and energy intensive process done through reverse osmosis (RO) cheaper and more efficient through the utilization of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC*) working on solar cells. They have also developed an innovative individual solar desalination system based on a low-temperature ORC with backing for the RO-Solar-Rankine project. Theoretically it eliminates energy storage and demonstrates higher fresh water production. *ORC is a thermodynamic cycle used to recover low-temperature (or waste) heat and convert it into a more constructive form of energy, typically electrical or mechanical.
